Gun
Drill - Firing the cannon is carefully demonstrated by the gun
crew. Each command and movement is explained for visitors.
Camp Life - The Battery's authentic camp gives visitors an
opportunity to see how the soldiers lived between battles.
Military artifacts - Many of the soldier’s tools and
accessories are displayed and interpreted for visitors.
Women’s History - Women played very active roles during the
Civil War; they filled jobs vacated by soldiers, opened Sanitary
Fairs, cooked, sewed, protested and supported the war effort in a
variety of ways. Some even put on the uniform of their nation!
The "Mess" - Many units employed cooks to provide meals --
and they ate well! From soups and stews to fried chicken and apple
pies, it’s cooking in the camp "kitchen".
Suds Row - The laundress was the only woman in camp to be
authorized by the Army. Visitors can try their hand on the scrub
board and talk with the laundress.
Children's Time - Children's toys and
activities are included in camp life. Learn about a game called
"Graces" or "Jacob's Ladder".
